Hi all,
I am testing out some new stoneware bodies that I can fire in wood and salt.
Many call for A.P. green fireclay. Is there any substitute fireclay out
there that has some tooth.
Also, any suggestions for additions that would prompt flashing.
thanks,
John Elder

Your best bet is Hawthorn Bond fireclay, 35 mesh if you want more tooth,
50 mesh if you want a smoother feel. The clay has low shrinkage, good
plasticity for a fireclay, no warping or cracking problems and a beautiful
orange fired color, though not as beautiful as A.P. Green.

Helmer works well for wood and salt and comes in various grinds to suit the
user. Many suppliers stock the 20 mesh grind while others now have the newer
30 mesh grind which is smoother. For porcelains, get airfloat.
