In the past I "appropriated" the small metal trash cans from faculty
offices - until someone noticed the decreasing number.
Couple of years ago I found some metal trash cans at Ikea for about
$10 each. I cut the existing handles near the top of the cans with
bolt cutters and screwed new handles near the bottom. We use them
upside down in a sand pit.

In my neck of the woods, Home Depot carries several sizes of metal cans and
buckets. A 30 gallon trash can and one much smaller (10 gallon maybe?).
They also carry metal wash tubs and metal pails (in the cleaning supplies
section). These work well if you are using a sand pit.

I've also seen the metal wash tubs and pails at craft/hobby stores (Macs and
Michaels)

I just built a raku kiln, I thought finding some good, small covered metal

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to find buckets / or what kind of
things you use..

Joyce Lee emailed me,, I had been to the big box stores already, Wal =
Mart, Kmart, Home Depot..none,, just the large metal garbage cans,, =
Joyce suggested the small local hardware store,, sure enough,, they =
didn't have them but were more than willing to order me a couple..
=20

Then trying to explain raku to someone that doesn't do clay is =
something I try to avoid unless I'm going to be there for a couple =
hours..

=20

One of the HS girls at my church is helping me build the kiln and =
using it as a 4H project, turned out the guy at the hardware store =
studied art / pottery in college, he knew raku,, and was very =
interested.. he's even the judge at the county fair and will be judging =
Amber's project.

=20

He doesn't have access to clay / kiln,, he hit me up to buy some clay =
and do some firing for him..I'm anxious to have another "clay friend" =
not too many of us in quincy.=20

=20

What a small world..

Jeff,

I found a bunch of small & medium metal trash cans with lids that are =
great reduction containers at Cost Plus. I think they are nation wide. =
We have several in Houston.=20

You can also use the heating duct work tubes (like dryer pipe-not the
flexible hose but the silver hard pipe). Caps are available and sometimes
the size of the container can affect the results in raku. They are all
galvanized aluminum but you can get taller, narrower forms than just the small
garbage cans. Home Depot and Menards all carry these. We have a Farm and Fleet
near us, I am not sure they are located all over the country but another good
source is a farming materials and / or auto store. Pans used to drain your oil
in are usually galvanized and work well for platters. Dawn

You may want to check out any fast lube places your town has. I get 35
gallon lube barrels from a local place in my town. They give them away
as it costs them money to dispose of (I think as hazardous waste) so I
do them a favor at the same time they do me a favor (real symbiotic
like). Cut them down to size or use as is. I paint my containers to
cover the brand name, and because I believe in all arts and crafts (and
especially Raku Pottery) aesthetics are very important.

I found some metal "paint & laquer" buckets with lids (perfect lids BTW)
available all over the internet at extremely reasonable prices..if you know
of a local business that paints wood furniture..they most likely have old
ones that are useless after holding "stain / finish" ..being that once it
drys in the can, it's not suitable for holding a new batch of stain...so....

Get these ...build a large paper fire in it and keep it going for 10
minutes to burn off the old residue....(not enviromentally sound but less
toxic "give-off" than your car gives off on a run to the grocery)

You're good to go...THEY WORK EXCELLENT!...and last a loooong time.
drawback is not being able to fit wide pcs. like large wide-rimmed bowls.
I use a Home Deopt galv. garbage can for those...available in SEVERAL sizes.
Though my experience has been ..no ONE store will have all sizes available
so call them before ya go.
