paperclay bisque

updated fri 11 jul 03

Hi
My next bisque will be to 815C for crystal wares.
The kiln will not be full ( neither fool!)
Paperclay I bisque to 1000C which is about ^06 . Can I add the regular
paperclay works to this firing?

Except weakness will it effect the glazing of the paperclay - I know you
can do them once firing but I do not want to test and adjust just to
fill the kiln.
Thank you (sincerely)

With 15% Newman Red in my clay, I fire to 1100 C at a rate of 100C per hour,
and 50 per hour to 1200, always single fire, and always paper clay.

Trying to once fire paper clay is going to be tricky - if there is any iron
in the body - maybe even if there is not.

All that carbon has to get out - and there is a lot more in paper clay. If
any glaze is sealed over - like boron glazes can - before the carbon is out
- well tht sounds like trouble to me.

The question becomes - is it possible to fire slow enough to get it out?

I've single-fired iron-bearing paperclay. Carbon-core
and brittleness are a potential problem, but are not
inevitable. (I was making semi-glazed or glazed-on-one-
side work, which may have helped.) With any single-fire
work, though, treat the early stages of firing just as
you would for a bisque of the same work. Thick work and
any work with a lot of organics will require a long,
slow burnout phase before real red heat is reached.

As for Ababi's glazes, there may be a reduction effect
on the glazes from the burnout of the paper, depending
on how much paper is used, whether any burnout is still
going on when glaze melt occurs, and whether the kiln
is vented.

No Ron I meant only To fire to 815C instead of 1000C But I will fill the
kiln wit crystal wares besides I will prefer not to add some paperclay
wares and fire faster
...I bisque the paperclay much slower
