wedging benefits

Doesn't pugging and spiral wedging cause the delamination mentioned due
to disturbance of the weak electric bonds between crystal sheets? I
would think the need to wedge just prior to throwing is a result of
enough time elapsing to allow reestablishment of bonds between sheets as
the clay sat resting. Water distribution, of course, is critical since
most of the cations/anions forming those bonds generally would come from
the water. Wedging detaches sheets from other sheets, and breaks parts
of the sheets apart. Once the clay rests, the reattachment between
sheets begins. So the clay seems stiff and cold. If I have this wrong,
please correct me, as the topic interests me. Most of what I have
described here I gleaned from Lawrence and West. C. A. Sanger
