Hi All,

I just did my first crystalline glaze firing (glaze formula and firing
schedule below) and for the most part I am very happy with the results I
got. The one problem is that the glaze that settled into the bottoms of =
the
bowels is not smooth or glossy like the sides. In fact it almost looks
charred with an abundance of very black, very dull, small needle like =
crystalline
forms. It sort of looks like a empty bird nest. No glassy appearance =
at all in the bottoms.

Formula
Ferro Frit 3110 50
Zinc Oxide 28
Flint 22
Bentonite 3
Manganese Dioxide 2
Cobalt Carb. 0.5

Firing Schedule
Rate Temp F Hold Time
200Hr 800
150Hr 1250
300Hr 2100
100Hr 2282 12 Min
Quick Cool 2012 1 Hr 22 Min.
150Hr 2066 2 Hours
Shutdown and cool normally

Any input is welcome.
Thanks
Larry

Hello Larry
What a recipe!
No no it is not the recipe!
The crystal glazes are very runny.

Drill a small hole in the middle of the plate.
I got the best result when I had done it after the bisque. This way,
when I added a little water I could tell where was the center- the water
also cooled the bit. Use 1 m"m bit I
By the way: In the last firing I made the holes before the firing and
missed in some plates the center.

Since the crystalline glazes run - they gotta flow somewhere. On the
inside of bowls you'll need to put a very thin coat of glaze at the
bottom interior and thicker as you move up towards the rim. How much
is a matter of the bowl shape, the thickness of the glaze and how
that particular glaze flows. Yah just gotta experiment.

Larry, Some crystalline glazes just have this characteristic. I divide
the recipes into suitable for bowls or not with the first test tile. If
the drips are matt and rough the inside of bowls will be too. If the
drips are transparent hurray ! You get lovely pools with crystals
floating in them.
