Eric:
Try going online to http://www.claytimes.com. A few issues back, they had
instructions IIRC on how to convert a "junk" electric kiln into a raku kiln.
Might give you some of the info you need.

i need a raku kiln and am inclined to make my own. i know that i can
"cowboy" it and use a barrel or whatever and line it with kao wool, but i don't trust
my own design knowledge enough to do it yet. does anyone know where i can
get instructions to build one, hopefully with measurements, materials, burners
specified?

i see that i can buy them "off the shelf" for $700-$1000, but i'm hoping to
save a few bucks. plus i enjoy the building process.

thanks.

Hi Eric,

I made a dandy some years ago, as I later gave to a little
clay school...

I used expanded metal I got from a steel yard for free of
the scrap bin.

I riveted it into a cylinder...about two-feet of Diameter
and two and a half high...

I made a domed ('birdcage') 'top' of 1/2 cold-rolled Steel
'strap', as converged into a 'ring' into which I placed a
refractory 'chimney' I had thrown on the wheel and fired to
cone 'ten'.

In this I held some 'kao-wool' as cost me anout thirty
Dollars, held to the sides and inner 'top' with nichrome
wire from an old disused Kiln heating element, the 'wire'
passing through refractory 'Buttons' ) as overcoat Buttons
in size) to have their ends twisted on the outside of the
light, expanded metal 'cylinder'.

The base as a riveted legged stand about two-foot-six,
square, made of Angle-Iron and 1-1/2 X 1/8th. inch 'strap'.
The inner lip of the Angle Iron frame held some heavier
expanded metal sheet on which I had fitted Soft Bricks to
fill the field entire.

Two old 'burners' as I do not remember of what make or kind,
as liked the 'Propane' to run on.

I do not think it had cost me near a Hundred Dollars
entire...was handsome, and worked quite well.

One lifted the 'lid' of course...and could do so in a
variety of fail-safe ways...

I used it for a while to smelt Brass and some other
things...then the school needing one, I let them have it.

best!

Steven Branfman's book _Raku, A Practical Approach_ has a few designs and MUCH good information, which will make you much more self-trustworthy.
