To center large pieces I generally do the same as John Rodgers. I slam a bag
of 25 lbs of clay down on my wedging table while it is in the bag, remove the
bag and slam it down on all eight corners then while walking to my wheel I
round it out a bit more. Then I throw the ball down on the bat that is on my
wheel and SLOWLY center. I taught myself to throw large pieces of clay and had
a mound of several hundred pounds of clay on the floor in front of the wheel
from failed attempts. Once I slowed the wheel speed I started having success.
Also, I don't touch the clay before the wheel is turning and Mel's advice
about legs is crucial. I love throwing large pieces though trimming them is a
pain!
