I am recommending a book to all clay loving fools !!

The Arcanum by Janet Gleeson

It is the true story of how the Europeans discovered the way to make porcelain ... it is
absolutely fabulous ... who knew there was all this intrigue and suspense in the clay
world??

The chemist was kept in a locked room with all the windows bricked over so no one
would spy on him! There are escapes and plots and counter plots !! It is a very fun book
for anyone interested in history or clay.

I was able to purchase the hardcover edition used ( though it was brand new) for $3 on
Amazon ... cost me more to ship it.

Chris Campbell - in North Carolina - immersed in Meissen in the 1700's ....

I heard about this book from a total stranger on Amtrak last week. With any
luck it will arrive today.

Check out the price at Strand Books also (plug plug my daughter works there)
-- sometimes their prices are better than Amazon's.

I agree. Great read for me the potter and friend the history buff. We
both loved it and devoured it in one sitting. My 22 year old son, the
potter's flunky, is making noise about wanting to read it in spite of what
he calls a "foofy" cover or I would offer to share.

Iv'e read the arcanum. It is a very good read. it deals with the 'discovery'
or the secrecy surrounding the discovery and early development of
translucent porcelain in Europe - centuries after the Chinese.
Full of intrigue and politics at the Royal court, as I remember.
Best wishes
