more cobalt info

Here is another link with more info than you ever wanted. While not so alarming that one should never even be in the same room as a can of Cobalt. It is good enough reason for me not to put it in my clay. It is from the Feds so you know it is true.

While I wouldn't suggest treating ANY of the chemicals that we use in a
cavalier manner, I do think that you are over reacting here. MOST of
what I read in your article referenced below was concerned with the
radioactive forms of cobalt. It is a ***possible carcogen*** and just
about everything we are exposed to can be that under the right
conditions. Go with the MSDS warnings and you should be fine. I
wouldn't have a problem with using colored clays especially if I only
did it occasionally.

I read the synopsis as well as the full technical

statement on exposure to cobalt. Here's some stuff that

seems relevant:

I quote from the popular synopsis:

"Tests have shown that cobalt does not enter the body

through normal skin, but it can if the skin has been

cut."

In the studies cited, 10% of people exposed had allergic

reactions resulting in dermatitis. So, if you turn out

to be one of the folks who is allergic to cobalt (or

nickel - the reactions are linked), and if you get

dermatitis from it, quit using it as a body stain. It

seems to be safe enough for everyone else.

Inhalation is clearly a greater hazard, resulting in

"wheezing, pneumonia, and athsma" in people exposed to

large quantities of the dust, plus the long-term issues.

Anyone who doesn't wear a dust mask when working with

dry powdered oxides is an idiot, anyway, as far as I am

concerned, but none of the information in the study cited

seems to recommend against using cobalt as a body stain,

unless you have open cuts or sores on your hands. Even

then, the health hazard seems relatively minor, as such

cuts are presumably temporary and would not result in

continued long-term exposure by that route.

It's nice to have this comprehensive report to read. I

like getting the straight information. But based on the

information it contains, I think I'll keep using cobalt.

Hello Earl,

I inadvertently hit the "send" button.

don't SEE anything from you in this post.........
