I find that when making large platters, sinks, planters, etc., it really does help to avoid switching my hands from centering position when throwing the walls. At least, until my diameter and height are where I need them to be. Shaping may be a different story. This only works on big stuff; it really can mess with mugs and little bowls. All you do is keep your left hand on the outside of th pot, on the left side, and use your right hand on the inside, still keeping the wheel rotating counter-clockwise...
