It's a perfect day, sunny and blazing blue with a cool breeze..I bet Ann
Arbor is awash in people, dogs, strollers, street music, food smells...
sigh. I wish i could be there.. but not this year. Anyway I am packing
for a week at Appalachian center for Crafts with (ahem) Lana Wilson
which is some consolation (big grin).

Good luck and good show to all the potters out there this week! May this
be "one of the good years"! Say hello to my friend maiolica potter Ann
Tubbs who is in the juried fair this year (go Ann!)

And be on the lookout for my parents, Cap and Doris Averill, who are
there today with friends, their annual ritual. Reading my posts you
might picture them as "american gothic" or some ma and pa kettle types,
in overalls chewing straw.. but no. I am "nouveau poor" ;0)

Dad has hands like a baseball glove, big and work-worn and usually
sporting some fresh chain saw injury... but he has a rolex and a diamond
the size of a headlight. He will probably be doing the "husband"
thing... hanging in the shade w/ arms folded while the wives poke
themselves into booth after both... he has a fat money clip, but his
tastes run more to Remington westernish bronzes than pots. He IS looking
always for the perfect half-a-cup size coffee cup that will fit his
bratwurst of a finger... he usually brings a few home, hopefully, but
they never turn out to be "the one". He broke his beloved one years
ago...had his secretary photocopy it (!) and ask if I could make one
like it. (no such luck.)

Now MOM is the one you should watch for! She has an eye for the arty
pot... and a new condo with tall shelves on either side of the
(remote-operated) fireplace. She'll be wearing something arty, (yeah,
THAT really narrows it down at the AA fair) -- lots of diamond rings...
she looks nothing like me (peasant stock with the paternal family nose,
www.primalmommy.com) except for really blue eyes... she's in her mid
sixties and could still fit into her high school homecoming queen
dress...

Anyway all you need to do is memorize these descriptions, spot them in
the crowd of thousands, and tell them how brilliant their daughter kelly
is ... and you can probably sell them something.

Did I mention she's buying me a Richard Aerni pot? (grin)

Good day, good sales, good company to all ... may the booth blockers not
stand in yoour doorway... may the kids with yoyos stay far from your
shelves of delicate porcelain.. may you eat good food and go home rich..
Kelly in Ohio .. where I planned yesterday's dinner around the first
ripe tomatoes of the year... and went out at the last minute to find a
clay class student had let the chickens into the garden, where they ate
every red tomato in sight... a lesson in patience perhaps.
