Hello Everyone,
I have been salt firing with a friend here in California for the last year.
The immediate neighbors do not have any problems with the smoke, fire,
kilns, etc...However, during our firing last night the fire department paid
us a visit. We had just finished salting, but had to shut down the kiln on a
soft cone 10, about a half hour sooner than anticipated. A further neighbor
felt that she would save our lives and call 911.
Anyway, we are at a loss about what to do. We are wondering if anyone else
has had a similar problem and has any advice?
We are considering seeing if we can get the kiln permitted by the fire
department, but also wondering if this would create a further problem due to
the fact that there are four other kilns on site (none of which are
permitted). We have a 100 cubic foot gas kiln, a 20 cubic foot West Coast
Gas kiln, a large Skutt Electric, a Cress Fast Fire Electric test kiln, as
well as this 6 cubic foot Alpine Gas kiln, converted into a salt kiln. If we
attempt to get one permitted, then we are afraid that they will force us to
permit all the kilns. What if they don't accept the permit for the salt
kiln, then start looking into the other kilns? It could potentially be a big
problem!
If there are any other California potter's that have any advice about
permitting or anyone who thinks they could give us some suggestions, please
pass them on!
Thanks!
Chris
