holes in platters

there are a thousand ways.

but, what to do, what to do?

i put one hole in the ring foot of all
platters. (and larger bowls etc.)
i keep several old drill bits on my wheel work table, and
just drill them through the ring foot when done
turning it.

it has several purposes.

it lets air flow through the platter, under the ring
foot. keeps things from cracking. moisture can escape, not
just sit in there...a closet for water.

it lets the gases out from under the ring foot when
glaze firing. (rather than stuck tight to a shelf.)
it is a little farter hole, them gases have to get out.

and, of course i slide a nice piece of picture hanging wire
in there...wrap it around a tiny stainless steel washer on
the inside...and a simple wrap back on itself for the out
side....hang it on a nail.

just be sure you keep that hole on the top when decorating.
silly to have it on the bottom..then the design is upsidedown.
(did you catch that one...complex.)

many customers have a hard time finding a place to store platters.
the wall is the best. then they have a new painting, take it down
when they have 100 pork chops to serve.
( i love it when folks come back and chat with me after
buying a big platter...`holy cow mel, that damn thing really
holds a lot of food...never thought it would hold that much.`)

Eh.... thanks. I taught that one to myself (the hard way, of course! :)

That is fascinating about putting a hole in all of them. I just made two
plates. One had holes for hanging, and one did not. The rim of the one that did
not warped during second (cone 10) firing. Did the holes help protect the other
one?

i always drill 6 holes in the ring foot of all the
platters and bowls i intend to hang on the wall.
right after trimming. why six? it's easy to devide
a circumference into six equal arcs. and one of them
can be (close to) the top, or i can use two holes to
wire through.
i agree. you can use the wall to keep plates, esopecially
large ones. only problem is, i stopped buying prints.
they compete with my platters for the space.
