Got an old Pacifica electric that I built from a kit they used to
offer. Kit included all metal parts, belts and foot pedal - I built
the frame. Has been going strong since 1979.
Have an old metal 4 legged stool that I got from a school surplus
sale. Just about the same height as the wheel head.
Have a bad lower back from years of manual labor and lifting heavy
things the wrong way.
My lengthy throwing sessions are no problem for my back! All the
prepared balls of clay are on the table that's across the room from
my wheel. I gotta get up to put the pot I just threw on the shelf
across the room, walk over to get a new ball of clay and walk back to
the wheel to throw the next pot.
I tell my students: "Leave your clay on your shelf and walk over to
get it. Rest your back, if only for a minute. Sit at the wheel the
whole time and you'll walk out of here like the Hunchback of Notre
Dame".
Like lots of stuff in life, common sense ain't all that common.
