multiple-zone kilns (paragon controller/thermocouple question)

The DTC 600C is a single-zone controller. The first multi-zone Paragon
controller was the DTC 1000. The Sentry is also multi-zone.

A multi-zone controller has electrical terminals for three thermocouples
and three relays. If you order a single-zone kiln, two sets of
thermocouple terminals and two relay terminals will remain bare. To
convert a single-zone kiln to multiple zones, you would need a rewire
the kiln and install two extra thermocouples. You would also need to get
a software code from the factory to reconfigure your controller to
multi-zone. (Bartlett and Orton controllers use factory codes to
determine whether your controller is multiple or single zone.)

It makes better sense, to me, to spend the money on a single Type-S
thermocouple rather than convert to 3-zone. Tim Frederick told me he has
used the same Type-S thermocouple for many years in his cone 6 firings.
As long as the Type-S is not broken from loading the kiln, it will soon
pay for itself in the Type-K thermocouples you no longer replace.

Thanks Arnold,

Sorry. My question was actually about whether the controller could
handle multiple types of thermocouples rather than many simultaneous
thermocouples. I was checking to see if this controller would be able
to use a type S or not. Alas, not my kiln so not my call. If I had my
druthers, we would be coating her type s thermocouple and elements in
ITC. Those would be the last elements and thermocouple she would ever
buy. The price for that, of course, would be much more than one kiln
load's worth of my pots fer' sure.
