Maybe it was what is called 'Felt', or Roofing Felt...
(Tarred 'Felt' in effect, if figurative 'felt' in it's way,
as, I do not know if it any longer is actually Wool, but
likely some other fiber source...)
Which comes in different 'weight' designations, as so-many
'pounds'...60 Lb. 'Felt' whatever...the higher the pound
enumeration the heavier (thicker) it is.

The material we were using was Italian as we were in Italy so it
could be something that we don't have here in the states exactly. It
was smooth on both sides and very tarry. Quite flexible. The roofing
felt sounds about right.
