antique road show

I was given 2 tickets to the Antique Road Show coming to San Francisco
on Aug 16th.
Each person is allowed to bring 2 pieces to be appraised. Big decision,
what to bring?
Possibilities:
1. Bernard Leach covered incense pot
Joe Bennion was here for a workshop and we stopped at Palo Alto
Goodwill and Joe bought the box for $1.99 and gave it to me. It is
illustration 50 in the book, Bernard Leach, a potter's work.
2. Hamada plate
At a local auction, I bought a box with 3 plates in it. A Hamada, a
Shimoaka, and a Kawai for $35. It was from the estate of a man who
worked for the American embassy in the 60's and collected ceramics.
3. Picasso Edition small bowl
Found in a thrift store for $3.25
I'm leaning toward the Leach and Hamada.
I will let you know what happens.

My two cents:

Don't bring the Leach Incense Pot. If it has the "BL" mark on it and not
just the St. Ives mark, then it is worth 400-550 dollars. I have seen
several sell in the LOW 500 dollar range (in perfect condition) Any chips
cracks, dings, etc... would make it worth 200 or less.

I would take the Hamada plate and the Kawai plate. It would be much more
interesting to see if they can determine the maker, and what they would be
valued at without the original signed box they would have come in.

Keep us posted...

Take Care,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Thank you for the information on the Bernard Leach incense pot. It does
have BL on it and it is in perfect condition.
It is great to know it is worth $400-$550.
I think I will phone and see if I can take all three plates (Hamada,
Shimoaka and Kawai) as one item since they were bought together. I also
have a Hamada teabowl I bought in SF Japantown shop years ago for $40
(no box) and another Hamada teabowl I got at the St Vincent de Paul
thrift shore for 25cents. I left the price tag on it. Ha!

Barbara,

You're so lucky to be going! I think Phyllis Lee and Liz King are going as
well. It would be great to see several ceramic items on the show!

Personally, I think you should go with the Leach and Hamada, just
to see what they tell you.

David Rago and Suzanne Perault, who do many of the pottery appraisals
on the Antiques Roadshow, usually come to the pottery collectors show
at the Santa Clara Country Fairgrounds each year... they are several
other vendors are usually available to give appraisals as well.
