baso valves -- john baymore's comments

To those who are interested in gas kilns:
John's comments are cogent and correct.
I would add, if you are installing your own burner system, be sure that
your manual gas shutoff valve is NEVER the same valve you use to manually
control the flow of gas. The manual control valve should be downstream --
closer to the burner -- of the block valve.
If you want to keep it simple and buy off-the shelf equipment to fire
your kiln, in the U.S. you would do well to contact Marc Ward at Ward Burner
Systems, Dandridge, TN. http://www.wardburner.com/
Marc supplies robust pilot burners, BASO valves, etc. He's a potter and
knows what potters need.
I have no association with this supplier...other than being a satisfied
customer.
Good firing!

....Baso valves are not the only way to do flame monitoring at a "lower

Here is a site for the high tech crowd..I bought a system like
this to put in my gas kiln --when i finish it that is--- It will sense the
lack of flame during the flame out. I tied it into a supplied output to
shut down the main gas feed going to all four burners.. Tested it out in my
raku kiln and it works like a charm. simulated a flame out 30 times and it
shut down kiln gas supply all 30 times..It does cost substantially more but
i feel i owe it to myself and others around me when i fire. I don't take
saftey for granted..I used to and learned the hard way..Burns hurt no
matter how you go about getting them..got mine from a 480Volt buss in our
shop. I was installing a buss plug and felt the lift i was using was stable
enough..lost my balance and lost skin off both hands and arms and blew a
hole in my foot. NEVER TAKE ANY SAFTEY PRECAUTIONS LIGHTLY.YOU WILL
EVENTUALLY PAY FOR IT.. I did.
That was five years ago and i have 100% recovered from all
wounds..physically anyway..Alot more respect for electricity of any
voltage..Anyway here is web site www.fireye.com Only one e between fire
and eye not two..SEE YA
