slow wheel speed.

This AM put on my Little Scientist Outfit and went to studio. Put 12" bat
on wheel and marked it at one point on the circumference. Started wheel
and set it at what I thought would be my throwing speed. 60- revolutions a
minute!

Then took ball of clay (about 2-3 lbs) and put it on spinning wheel. Threw
a 12" salad type bowl. Worked fine.

Then took another bat and put the clay on the STOPPED wheel and set the
pedal as I thought it should be. It as a bit faster than I like but another
12" bowl. When I was done I ripped a white fuzzy off my studio towel and
dropped the fuzzy on the rim of the bowl. I clocked those revolutions at 80
per minute.

I did not change the speed on the wheel at any time, except as said, between
two bowls. In other words I throw somewhere between 60 and 80 revolotions a
minute.

ONE MORE THING!!! AS I HAVE WHINED BEFORE I THINK A LOT OF THE DAMAGE DONE
TO MY HANDS AND WRISTS CAME FROM OVERTAXING THEM TRYING TO THROW TOO FAST
AND TOO HARD CLAY FOR ME--NOT NECESSARILY FOR GOV. VENTURA.

Be of good courage....

Thanks to Lili and Mel, and everyone else who contributed to the "Leach
treadle wheel" discussion here recently.

I had been having inconsistent, frustrating results recently with larger
amounts of clay, and this business of slowing the wheel has really helped me
to overcome much of the problem of throwing these larger (for me) forms, as
well as decreasing the stress on my wrists and hands. I thought I was
returning to the long-ago production woodshop days of constant pain before
this thread. It is a relief to get more gain with less pain.

I love this list.
