Lois,
>I have gotten a good number of inquiries directly from my web site,
including one from a store, who checked out my site after [receiving] a
postcard.
>While I don't do direct sales a la Amazon, my site has been quite
valuable to me as a selling/marketing/informational tool.
You hit the secret to an effective Web site with this one post. That's why
it has been successful for you. One of my early Web customers (art product)
credits the site I did for him as the reason he could quit a very stable day
career and work full time on his business. But he's wrong. Oh, the site was
good, and I can't say I hate the hero status, but the truth is that he
marketed the heck out of that site. From it he does some direct sales, but
more important, he had a place to send the retail stores he contacted by
phone and mail. A simple letter to corporate buyers citing the Web address
was highly successful for huge multiple sales. He had a link to send to
magazines in press releases, and his product presentation on the site
enticed many to include his product in What's New sections. That route
brought him commissioned work from all over the US. Good site but it could
have just as easily sat doing nothing. HIS USE of that tool brought him the
success.
Nobody prints a four-colour catalogue and stores it in the cupboard
expecting results for their investment. Many do it with Web sites.
Congratulations for your insight.
