evenheat kiln question

Hello Mel;

I have an Evenheat Kiln I purchased at a school auction. It is an old =
toggle switch model 6320XL.
7 cubic ft. 6 switches cone 8 and it is very good shape. I've had allot =
of trouble with it and get differing opinions on what to do. I replaced =
all the elements as it wasn't reaching temperature cone 6. It worked a =
few times but then it just would get to 2000 F and stay there never =
getting higher. Glaze firings took up to 16 hours and the cones were not =
bending at all.=20
On advice from someone I found a ceramic disk in the wiring box that I =
was told was an automatic shut off. I checked this out by running the =
kiln and when it got to 1900 and wouldn't go higher I opened the lid and =
the top two element were off. So I re-wired the kiln to bypass this =
disk. This seemed to work as the next firing was good. But then it was =
back to reaching 1950 F and sitting there, cones not bending. I also =
changed all the switches to new ones as they were a bit sticky and that =
helped for a few firings, but there is still something that is not =
right.
The kiln is in very good shape and the elements are all functioning as =
I checked again once reaching the 1950 F but getting no higher.=20
Can anyone help me and tell me what's going on with this kiln. I'm =
ready to get rid of it and buy a new one. =20

Paula,
I'm stressed. I just got the exact same kiln that you did...I haven't done
the wiring in my house to support it but now I'm concerned that my bargain
may have turned into a turd (LOL) I'm only going to be using mine for
bisque, converting the same size gutted to a gas for cone 10. Worst case is
that we can use each other for a sounding board. I'll call my guys at
Marjon Ceramics here in Phoenix to see if they have any pointers. Good luck
and PLEASE keep me posted. I can't wait to throw switches every hour (but
beggars can't be choosers).

You might check in to your wall voltage. Kilns are
designed for 240 Volts, if you are 220, 208, etc...they
wont fire to full temperature. Friend had same thing
happen to him, couldn't figure out why he couldn't get to
cone 10.

maybe check that...

Call Evenheat rather than trying to get answers from people who don't
know this kiln. I've posted their number in a previous message.
