Hi...Once again I am asking to 'pick your brains'.....our guild is
considering having many of our glazes tested for leaching. I know this can
be done at Alfred (for about $50 a piece)....have any of you had experience
with other labs? I did a google search (following clayart archive
suggestion) and came up with over 20,000 hits...but after looking at the
first few pages gave up....
any advice???
many thanks

Hi Judy,
I now use Brandywine Science Center. I helped set them up when service
got so terrible at Alfred Analytical a couple or three years ago. I
cross checked a half dozen samples at both labs and they were very
close. They are close to my home and give 1 week turnaround. I get
nothing from them other than good service and convenience. Their prices
are competitive will Alfred Analytical ($5 for the leaching and $13
each for most materials analyzed for--so 1 sample looking for, say,
copper is $18; to look for copper and cobalt would be $31). I don't
know whether AA's service has improved or not--I've never had reason to
go back. AA and BSC are the only reasonably price labs I have found.
The others I have checked (some time ago) were at least double in price.
You can learn more about BSC at:
http://www.bsclab.com/bsclab_pottery.htm
I gave you the page that takes you straight to where you want to go
because they do have one problem--they need a web designer who knows
how to make fast loading pages. Their's is sloooooow, so be patient.
Alternatively you can call them at 610-444-9850 and talk to Mike or
email them at
info@bsclabs.com
Regards,
John

the mugs I made for your project are STILL drying.... (we've had a rather
humid wet season)
but I haven't forgotten! After they bisque and glaze, I'll get them in
