Well, I've finally psyched up to trying my new "old" kiln. I got started
rather late in the day and afraid I may be up a while. How long does it
take, on avaerage, for an electric kiln to reach Cone 06? I'm tired and I
wanna go to bed. Thanks, Gaye

Aside from the fact that this is hardly an instant reply, the real answer
is, "it depends" -- on kiln size, age of the elements, your wiring, your
available voltage and amperage, and how full the kiln is.
My little 18"x22" internal size is around 4 hours to 04 with not much in
it. Fully loaded, it's closer to 5-6, with a kiln vent.

Hi Gaye,
I fire bisque on computer "Cone Fire 05 Slow" and it comes out 06 in 12 hours, give or take a few minutes. Depends how fast you want to go.

how fast do you want to fire.. some think slow firings are better (and i
belong to this group i fire cone 06 in about 7 to 8 hours... However some
commercial tile companies complete the tile from greenware to glazed in just 27
minutes.. ( yes that it true -- from start to finish in less than 30 minutes)

Just a short note on this.
Manufactures need to formulate clays and glazes in a certain way to avoid
the problems with fast firing.
If studio potters want to fire fast they will need to understand the
problems associated with fast firings .
Clays will have to be chosen that don't have a lot of contaminents and
they will need to be fluxed higher - glazes will need to have much more
melter or they simply won't melt.
