For those of you who need horsehair for your horsehair pottery:
I buy the entire tail from a place called Crazy Crow Trading Post. They are
based somewhere in Texas. They have the NEATEST stuff for Native American
and mountain man crafts.
Here is a link:

My husband uses horse hair for his Native American crafts, and a tail
usually costs only about $7 - $8 or sometimes $9 each, depending on a sale
price.
The only drawback to the cheap price is that they have NOT been cleaned,
just dried and salted. I believe that they get them from a rendering yard,
and the tails are pretty odorreferous (?). In plain words, they STINK like
road kill!
When I get an order in, I immediately throw them in the deep freeze, bag and
all, for a couple of days. It kills the odor to a certain extent, and I can
cut the hair off without worrying about the smell. I then separate the hair
into small long bundles, wrap in small rubberbands, and wash them with lots
of soap, and then soak them in Mane & Tail conditioner. If you are going to
use them for horsehair pottery, you could probably eliminate washing them.
I hope this helps.
