I am looking for the name of an artist who does very large (5 to 6 feet)
sculptures that are architectural/reminscent of buildings, etc. She builds
them outside and then fires them by open bonfire, I think. She has been
featured in Ceramics Monthly or Clay Times.

I hope this is not too vague, but I have the opportunity to do the same
thing (at least the firing by bonfire part) and wanted to read this article
again.

Does anyone know who I am referring to? Or any hints at things I should be
aware of in doing this? Thanks.

Janice,

--2 inch 8# fiber (unless you want to build a brick kiln around it)
--Make sure your base is high temp brick (I would imagine you would
incorporate this into the design)
--If you really wanted to work, you could build the sculpture on the base,
leaving a firebox underneath and wood fire it.
--will it be glazed or unglazed?

--If you go the gas route, based on the size of the sculpture, estimate and
have enough propane on hand to fire it.
--You can use 500,000 BTU burners.
--How long do you estimate the firing will take?

All depends on scale, the form, and surface.

Email me off list with an exact description of what you plan, scale, type of
clay, surface desier, and I can make my recommendations.

Thank you.

Laurie Spencer makes clay domes fired on site. The largest is around 16
to 18 feet tall. Her work has been featured in CM but I don't know how
long ago. She is in Tulsa, OK and teaches at Holland Hall (private
school). You could do a search for the school and get her email address
if she is who you are thinking of. I see her ocassionally but didn't
find info where I thought it was. Mail me if you don't find her online
and I'll get contact info to you.

Hello Janice,

Could it be Nina Hole (sp?), she did some collaboration with Fred Olsen.
I seem to remember them wrapping the sculpture in layers of ceramic
fiber, then unwrapping it at high temperature. She is from Denmark, I
think.

Good Luck,
