A search and reading between the lines make me
wonder if tiles were formerly made at the mission
in Carmel. I recall seeing a painting by a local
desert artist who had moved here from the
California coast (which is outlined with old Spanish
missions) ...... in several paintings there were
strikingly beautiful, simple floor tiles similar to
terra cotta tiles produced today. However, these
tiles were worn and polished through time and
the polishing action of thousands of sandaled
feet. Or so it seemed to me.
Trims on walls were tiles also ..... mostly blue and
white.
I hope this is related, and that your tile did come
from such an environment.
