acrylic paint on tiles (was: new to list- have a question)

Michele

You will not be able to glaze these tiles. Firstly the acrylic
with burn off / discolour and secondly, adding another glaze to
commercial tiles is very difficult to do successfully.

I and a great many others would also hope that these tile murals
are for your own use only, because although acrylic paint will
probably stay on them quite well even without the only additional
surface treatment available to you (varnish), they are truly not
of a sufficiently high quality to sell to clients. You will be
doing tile makers everywhere a great disservice, however
beautifully you have decorated them. They will never be
scratch-proof and in the usual areas where tiling is used
(bathrooms, kitchens, table-tops) the painting will rub off
through cleaning.

Using the wrong material for the job is not a responsible action,
either for your own future reputation or that of others. It is
simply not the done thing. But do not despair! What you now need
to find are on-glaze colours which are "fixed" by firing at low
temperatures and start all over. Look upon those you have already
painted as proto-types and part of your learning curve. There
should be classes for ceramic painting near you or you can try
this method out at one of the paint-a-pot shops.

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser
