Michelle....
I think a definition of ceramic materials is about
how the materials respond to the affects of
heat.
That is my basic definition....from there one
can find a range of surfaces....qualities of
painterly surfaces....
A friend defines an acrylic paint as a
"room temperature glaze"...
often when fired the material burns away...
So you are left with exploring
ceramic materials, predictability to
be replaced by surprise.
There are multiple choices and qualities
of glazes and surfaces....
Perhaps you could let go of the desire for acrylic
color and travel the path of adventure in
glazing.
I think that the common thread of most ceramic
folks is trusting the fire to provide gifts,
surprises, lessons, tolerance...fill in an adjetive
which can range from bliss/joy to frustration.
For painterly surfaces...I have seen astonishing work
that takes advantage of the material used in ceramics...
it's just different than 2d work...
look at Edward Eberle....how about the drawing of
Deborah Groover...just two examples of many.
I don't mean to preach...just ignite and inspire...
mostly to trust the material and process to
provide rich sources.
