oops, wrong chemicals!

updated thu 4 sep 03

Libby Krause on mon 1 sep 03

I'm very new at posting questions here but hopefully someone can help
me.

I was mixing a low fire white glaze and accidently put alumina oxide in
rather than zircopax. I was in a hurry and grabbed the wrong bag, big
mistake! Should I toss the whole batch or is there any way to salvage
it? The recipe is:

Frit 3124 83.34
OM4 8.33
EPK 8.33

Zircopax 11.11
(I put 11.11 Alumina oxide)

I would appreciate any input.
Thanks,
Libby

You didn't give a temperature but I would suspect the batch is trash. I
would however give it a good stir and test it.

Heavens, Libby, you NEVER throw glaze away! You can always fool around with
it and get something usable. You may not be able to duplicate it later, but
you can always make something of it.
On this one, I'd first teat the "mistake" and see what it looks like. It
may actually be different from the original recipe, but usable. Then I'd
mix up a batch of the "right" recipe and make blends of the two. Or, better
yet, make the original recipe with frit 3134 rather than 3124. The two
frits are very similar except that 3134 has no alumina and 3124 does, so
you'd be able to add more of the batch with added alumina to the 3134
recipe.

This batch with the added alumina will undoubtedly be way more matte than
the original, so try blending it with the glossiest, runniest glaze you can
find.
But there's always something you can do to salvage a mistake like this.
Boy, am I glad I've never done that! (Yeah, right!)

Hello Libby:
Did you know: Libby in Hebrew; my heart. What a lovely name!

Your mistake is a lot bigger:
I copy now from the ceramic web:
http://grafik.sdsu.edu/ceramicsweb//

Majolica recipes:
Cochrane Majolica: CM 11/90

Matthias's Majolica cone 05

Frit 3124 83.34%

ball clay 8.33

EPK 8.33

+ rutile 1.11%

Zircopax 11.11

The majolica glaze is made to be like a paper you can paint over
defiantly not a typical ^ 03^ 04or ^05 glaze
Here it is without the rutile

COCHRANE MAJOLICA
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Cone 6 1222 deg.C. -
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

frit 3124 83.34
OM-4 Ball Clay 8.33
EPK Kaolin 8.33
ultrox 11.11
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Seger Weight%
KNO 0.303 5.45%
CaO 0.694 10.85% Much to high for low fire
MgO 0.003 0.03%
Al2O3 0.442 12.55% The alumina is medium high for ^6
B2O3 0.542 10.52%
SiO2 3.200 53.61% The alumina is high ^6
ZrO2 0.200 6.87%
TiO2 0.005 0.12%
K2O 0.023 0.60%
Na2O 0.280 4.85%
Al:Si 7.24
Expan. 7.04
ST 337.15
All the remarks I added are giving you an explanation why it is a stony
matte in low fire.
Now "your" glaze:
LIBBY
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Cone 6 1222 deg.C. -
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

frit 3124 83.34

EPK Kaolin 8.33
alumina oxide 11.11

Seger Weight%
KNO 0.303 5.45%
CaO 0.694 10.85%
MgO 0.003 0.03%
Al2O3 0.802 22.77% The alumina is the height of ^12
B2O3 0.542 10.52%
SiO2 3.000 50.26%
TiO2 0.005 0.12%
K2O 0.023 0.60%
Na2O 0.280 4.85%
Al:Si 3.74
Expan. 7.43
ST 367.16

What to do? I would try to use it as an engob+ colorant oxides or stains
(Mason); bellow or above glazes; If you wanted that majolica glaze use
the advise of Lawrence and reuse the glaze. If you tested for a regular
low fire glaze - look for another recipe. I might be able to help you.
The last advise:
I do not know who is COCHRANE, I don't think he was a student of mine
defiantly not my teacher!
I would change the base this way
COCHRANE MAJOLICA
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Cone 04 1060 deg.C. -
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

frit 3124 73.00

Seger Weight%
KNO 0.305 5.44%
CaO 0.688 10.61%
MgO 0.006 0.07%
Al2O3 0.433 12.11%
B2O3 0.536 10.25%
SiO2 3.295 54.43%
ZrO2 0.203 6.88%
TiO2 0.010 0.21%
K2O 0.027 0.70%
Na2O 0.278 4.74%
Al:Si 7.62
Expan. 7.00
ST 343.11

In any case you will have a supper matte glaze , no need to drive
yourself creasy with these tiny numbers!

Hi Libby,

If you add the following ingredients to your mixture it will
produce a chemical match for the glaze you originally wanted.

Ferro 3124 116.6
Silica 11.30
Zircopax 27.00

This does not necessarily mean that the melt characteristics
will be the same but it is worth a try.

The new recipe in full is:
Ferro 3124 200.0
OM-4 Ball Clay 8.33
EPK Kaolin 8.33
Alumina Hydrate 11.11
Silica 11.30
Zircopax 26.00

Converted to total 100:

Ferro 3124 75.46
OM-4 Ball Clay 3.14
EPK Kaolin 3.14
Alumina Hydrate 4.19
Silica 4.26
Zircopax 9.80

Please test before you commit the new glaze to valued works.

Cheers,

Dear Libby Krause,

Before ditching that mistake fire some trial pieces with it . Apply a =
few under and over glaze strokes of Iron oxide and Cobalt Ox or Carb.

With that amount frit you will get a melt and possibly some degree of =
opacity or translucency.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia
