soaking a cress kiln

I have an old Cress Kiln and would like to soak the firings. Anybody here
able to tell me how to accomplish that?

Hi Bunny,
What model cress kiln do you own? If it is an FX or FTX series kiln you can
do a soak easily by turning off the Firemate speed control. If you want the
soak at the end of the firing that's another story. Let's say you want to
fire to cone 5 then drop 125 deg. and start a soak. First you'll need a
pyrometer to let you know how far in degrees your kiln has cooled. Then
you'll need to adjust the thumb wheel so that you will be decreasing in
temperature. Remember the thumb wheel turns in the ascending direction only!
So you'll have to go around quickly. Slowly decrease the number on the thumb
wheel until the pyrometer reads the target temperature and presto you have
your soak. If you are firing to cone 5 and want to do this, you'll have to
insert a cone 6 or 7 (depending on how long you want to soak.) in your kiln
sitter to make this work. For more understanding on how cones work go to
