Hello all,
I am following this thread with interest because potters here are
encountering the situation.
A clayperson from our area sells slipcast ware, some molds homemade, some
perhaps not. She does beautiful decorative finishes. In the past she sold at
a very large pre-Christmas sale in a large city north, very low prices,
undercutting the throwers and handbuilders. She said she wanted to be fair
to her clientel, would tell customers they were slipcast if was asked. The
general public doesn`t know to ask. Always sold out. Finally the other
potters complained so loudley she was permanently removed from the sale. Now
she sells at our small city`s Christmas festival, where the organisers are a
bit loose, striving to rent all the booth spaces, probably not knowing the
difference either. I am not involved with this sale, partaking in our
guild`s sale the same weekend, where slipcasting is not allowed, but it
irritates me, and it does affect our sales.
I see a correlation with painting. Big named painters make an original, then
pump out thousands of copies, via copy machine, labeling 105/3000 for example
,calling them limited editions. There are laws in the States about
labelling, original, print, reproduction, but last I read, not in Canada.
An aquaintance worked at a franchise art gallery, framing store in the mall,
and blatantly told me she told the customers these `posters` were a
wonderful investment would increase in value every year. Well known artist,
etc, yeah, right.
Getting ticked off, so will sighn out.
Lela The air is still hazey from smoke of fires to the west, but a small
sprinkling of rain here. Hopefully where the fires are too. Best wishes to
all.
