Dear Friends,

There is a book by Hermiani Boyde and her brother about their Claywork. =
They describe their experiences working as Jobbing Journeymen Throwers =
in France. Worked for a week or so producing pots for a French Potter =
then moved on. Later as they retraced their journey they returned to =
find their work had been converted into mould masters and was being =
reproduced in tonnage quantities.

Sorry, do not have a reference for this one but I may be able to let you =
know more in a couple of weeks.

Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia

Dear Ivor,

I have not read that book, but I would guess that the reason for the
change from throwing to casting that has occured in recient years in
Italy also, is lack if people who are willing to do production
throwing. I had to stop myself, the pain in my back was too great
(and my wrists were starting to bother me also). It is my
understanding that in ancient Greece the idiomatic expression "to
make pots" was used to mean HARD work.
