Dear ClayBuds,
I received exciting news this evening in my college clay class. My instructor
has been given a budget to buy new wheels. I assume the wheels we use are 20
or 30 years old. Based on that, it looks like the new wheels will have to last
a long time. My instructor wants to buy Brent CXC's. I've checked the
archives and found that as recently as April 2001, folks were having problems with
the pedals on new Brents. With this email, I'm asking for an update. If you have
bought a new Brent lately, what has been your experience? Has the pedal
problem been fixed? Are there other problems?
Thanks for your help

No, I am not running for governor
Come to think of it, we should have nominated Joyce.

Shula: Some time back, probably last summer, I was purchasing a wheel,
and the CXC was what I really, really, really, really, really, really
wanted, having used one in class. But when I went shopping, I was
disappointed with the newer ones - they just were not as smooth, just
didn't "feel" right. Not to mention the price. I ended up buying a
Shimpo Velocity V75, which cost only about half as much, and just felt
better, smoother, and I think even more powerful. It has the same
"table" configuration as the Brent, too, which I liked. Don't know what
the comparative specs between the two actually are, but when I tried
wrestling with them, the Shimpo was holding its own much better than the
Brent. I tried CXCs and V75s in three different stores, and my
experience was consistent, so it wasn't just the particular wheel at the
moment.
So I would recommend that before you assume the current CXCs are as sweet
as the older ones, check it out. I still love my Shimpo, although the
wheelhead has pitted much more than I think should be normal. But I
haven't taken that up with them yet because I throw on bats, not
wheelheads, and it's just not been a priority. The action, the power and
the pedal control are what matter to me. The Shimpo was just plain
better at the time, and it is still serving me well. The point is, the
Brent ain't necessarily what it useta' be, so tell your instructor to go
out and kick some tires before buying anything.
