Gosh, John, don't you have a simpler question? Seems to me that a
lot depends on what effects you wish to achieve and which family
of glazes you will be using. I don't believe there is such a
thing as a "system" here either. Sometimes required effects are
achieved using both on the same pot, not to mention glaze on
glaze...
And if Mrs. Flower Pot Woman has definite ideas about this...
Well, aren't you at an ever so slight disadvantage? Have you much
choice?
