Be thankful you live in Las Vegas and not NY.
Ryder wants $400 for the week, and .79 a mile. I need to go about 300
miles round trip. Yikes! And that's cheap - UHaul wants $1.99 a
mile.
The odd thing is, Ryder will rent me the damn van for 29.99 a day.
That is 209.93 for 7 days. BUT - they want $400 for the week. Makes
no sense. Unfortunately, I really need to rent the van, so I'll
continue shopping around, but the prospects don't look good.

Hi Lois,
Hell, if you lived here, you could borrow mine...!
I went and bought one just this last July, the first modern
vehicle I ever owned - a 1986 Chevy Van...not the super long
wheelbase, but enough room inside to get a Model "A"
Roadster body in there if I wanted to. Or a huge amounbt of
whatever stuff I want to put in there. I pulled the rear
seats and tossed 'em, so now it is in effect, something of a
Cargo Van. It had belonged to a neighbor, has silly
'windows' along the sides, it's Charm-School looks like
something you'd see parked on the side streets of say 'San
Pedro' or maybe 'Watts' in Sounthern California, was $1,100
and (knock on wood) has been a sweeite...has splotches of
gray primer here and there...has the '350-350' and could use
some better Tires.
Really, even though I bought it on a serendipity of urban
fantasy decedance-cameoflague and some respects for needed
logistics, I did not shop around at all. I do think one
might look around a little, and for a 1,000 Dollars more or
less, find an entirely reliable, honest, slightly seedy,
'seventies or mid 'eighties 'Van' as would be a good
workhorse. Put a little TLC into it, and...for what it would
have cost to rent one three times, you own one.
There are plenty of them out there.
My situation, is that sometimes I have to haul things
(things I have made, things I am to work on for someone,
schlep my Both contents to the 'n.c.e.c.a.', whatever) as I
would like not to have out in the open in a Pick-Up
Truck...or, I have to haul things as across several states.
The Van is a good method.
Same with you I gather!
Anyway...
Start checking those Want Ads maybe...find a nice private
party Van with lo-miliage, as would fit the bill...and, tell
them rental places they can just go choke on a bone.
Best wishes!
Good luck!
Phil

I agree that that is probably correct, BUT - - - what they told me is
that if you rent it for a week, you get the "commercial" rent, as they
assume anyone who needs it that long is likely to be a business or a
mover who needs another truck temporarily. So my ethical dilemma is
do I use them (I need the van 6 days, in which I can get the daily
rate) knowing they actively rip off businesses (who in turn charge the
consumer). OR do I use someone else, who will give me a better weekly
rate but a higher (double) per mile rate (ripping off the consumer up
front).
I do very few shows, and don't travel to the ones I do participate in,
so buying a van is out of the question. Although it might be cheaper
than renting at this rate.

Lois,
It is likely that they have found .......... when the Vice President of
Profits studied the data......... that a truck rented for a single day
generates more milage charge per day on the average than one rented for a=
week. This is because someone who rents the van for two days is likely
DRIVING that truck those two days. Someone who rents it for a week
might dive one or two days on either end... and then leave it parked for=
the other days. The milage charge really racks up fast.
If someone rents it for a week and actually drives it every day...... the=
y
make out like a bandit .

How about some lateral thinking. If possible rent a vehicle from your
departure locality to go to the next and
them rent a new vehicle for the return trip.

They usually have you there as well. One way trips usually cost more
than returning to the same site.

Except I live in NYC, and have no place for it to sit. Would have to
rent a garage space to store the thing.
I think I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet on this one.

Thought of that. There is a surcharge for a one-way rental. Comes
out about the same.
