PS: Methinks we should all be writing to Kodak and saying
..... hey...
wait a minute...remember us.

John
back when I was buying art materials for an art supply shop,
I use to buy film, paper, photo supplies for college photo
and photo printmaking classes and for area artists needs.
So I dealt with Kodak. Kodak was not the kind of company
where you could call Sally at customer service and talk to
her about your order. It is a leviathan, i.e. it is
HUUUUUGE.

You know about the paint industry.. almost like our ceramic
industry. Artist paint colors and pigments are largely
determined by colors used in ,say, the auto industry .
Acrylic, oils, watercolors, all of the artist colors
combined are a tiny part of the industry when you track back
to who processes minerals for pigments. As with ceramics:
hobby and studio ceramics are tiny in the world of mining
and even in use of ceramics materials.

Kodak... the branch of Kodak which deals with the public is
tiny compared to the branch of Kodak which deals directly
with the government and military. then you divide that up
into domestic v. foreign, new technologies v. old....
I think we are already deemed insignificant.

It does make you wonder about patents,etc....does anyone
else make them, could anyone else make them? mine is already
old but keeps chugging along. As long as they keep making
the BULBS......

I know, I know there are problems and expenses with digital
too...

I kind of have a love /hate relationship with slides though.
I like their quality, and the relative ease of showing them
and they look good on a large screen BUT
They are expensive to set up, to shoot, etc.
How many slides have I taken v. the ones I really use v. the
ones that actually got me into a show (when I was doing that
sort of thing???)
How many teaching applications were there where I had to
submit 20 slides of my work plus 20 slides of student work?
and of the 40 good slides submitted, how many 'not quite
good enough slides' did I also shoot, bracket, develop and
pay for, but never use???? It was expensive and time
consuming, yes part of the 'ritual', but think about it....

So I am all for a better way, though I imagine we'll have a
hybrid situation for some time to come . At this point, I
think the ones who will have to figure out an alternative
are all those juried exhibits , (where you also have to pay
to submit slides ).......I understand many of the position
announcements for jobs let you use a CD now....

You know, as a maker of 3D objects, I suggest maybe it is
time that we plunge straight toward the future and start
making holographs so at least the piece can be seen in the
round.!

Anyone who makes big round pots or sculpture with multiple
viewing angles knows what I mean.

So much of our aesthetic has been flattened out by looking
at 2D images of 3D things....

(this from someone who has gone largely over to tile, but
not entirely...It still gets put into 3D environments.)
