film again/archive

one of my big complaints about print film is
bad processing. fast washing.

if print film is washed and cleaned and proper
proportion of chemicals used, the prints
will last for many years.

in many one hour labs, with cheap quick processing,
you may be the last roll of film processed with weak
chemicals. they will always tell you it was `your fault`.
and, you have no recourse. same for slide processing.

i have always turned to professional labs, the same places
the full time photographers use. it takes a bit longer,
is more expensive, but you get quality results more often
than not. (accidents do happen, and always that family
wedding that cannot be re/shot gets murdered.)

seattle film is old movie film rolled onto 35mm rolls.
it is often outdated before you get it.
cheap yes, but, bad film. it is how you get free
film with processing. this is a bad deal.

i have been very concerned about archival quality
in film and digital imaging. we are moving to high
speed processing and losing quality and last ability. we will
pay a big price for this 50 years from now.
that is my concern.
my answer is acid free, cool storage. in a dark place.
be careful of poly and plastic...it can kill pix.

You're perpetuating an unturth here Mel.

It was true that years ago Seattle FilmWorks used old motion picture
film. They have not used short ends in years. Intimately involved with
this as my company built the automation equipment when they stopped
using that resource, that placed their fresh film into film cassettes
and packaged the cassette into the plastic film can. That was back in
the late 80's. They used these machines for millions of rolls before
they sent the whole process off site.
