Hi Randall,
For a 9''dia vase 15'' tall I would start with approximately
eight pounds. 15 pounds is alot for a piece that size. I am
by no means a pro but do primarily porcelain or the really
red stuff when in the mood for serious messing around.
I have found that backing off the the tonnage helps me to throw
thinner. There's not as much weight to support. Leave some
thickness where the shoulder should be so it doesn't collapse
on you. With 8lbs you'll still have something to trimm on the
bottom. The trick is to throw the inside the way you like it.
The outside can be altered.

Have fun and keep dirty,
