: how many pounds of clay?

Dear Randall Moody,=20

My quick rule of thumb arithmetic with a bit of approximating suggests =
that to get a vase 16 inches high with your 12 pounds of clay you would =
have a cylinder with parallel sides which is about 13 inches diameter if =
you allow for a wall thickness of about quarter of an inch. If you were =
aiming to throw a cylinder with the minimum diameter to accept your =
hand, though it might sound like an impossible feat, that amount of clay =
could?/would!! construct a cylinder round about forty inches high (:-;).

I suppose you have thought to slice a few of your attempts, top to =
bottom, to have a good look at the quality of your throwing? You need to =
do this to see where the mass of clay is residing. Another thing to =
consider is the diameter you are trying to get at the wheelhead. My =
experience is that if you wish to get tall vases they have to be slender =
top and bottom, say about four inches diameter inside. If you wish to =
belly the clay out then you need to preform the cylinder wall to give =
you more clay at the belly. This sets up an engineering problem with is =
pretty difficult to solve, but it can be done.

I think this is the steep part of that proverbial "Learning curve".

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia.
