Ilene,
I also worked with a bag of hard B-mix this summer and found that if I
sliced the 'loaf' like bread and then filled the bag with hot water and
waited about two-three hours it softened enough to wedge and throw.
Good luck,

Hi
Years ago I had placed some very hard but still damp blocks of clay in the
barn and they froze solid during the winter. Upon thawing, they were mushy and
delaminated but re-usable.
Sorry to hear about your wrists. I hope the best for you.

i got the tail end of a local suppliers last 4 boxes of cone 6 b-mix. it had
been in his studio for a while and was just too hard to throw with. on his
recommendation, i opened the bag and poured one cup of water in it, closed it
back up with the twist tie and place it in a five gallon bucket full of water. i
left it there overnight. next day, i found that the clay had softened
considerably and i was able to work with it.

on accident, i left a bag in there for several days and when i went to
retrieve it, found it to be very mushy. i had several old plaster bats from a kick
wheel i had purchased and i cut the clay off in sections, placing it on the
bats. i found that the bats would draw the excess water off and make the clay
very uniform in it's moisture content. i now use that method to recycle clay from
my scrap bucket i use when handbuilding. when i get enough for a bag full, i
just repeat the method used for the hard clay. it works great and i feel
better cause i'm not throwing all that good clay out.

take care and have a great day!
