glazes suddenly settling out.

A question from a local Arts Studio:

Question for you: We're having a problem with glazes suddenly=20
settling out and are clueless as to why. None of them share similar=20
ingredients, all made at different times, and both ^6 and ^10. Any=20
ideas?

I'd hate to start adding Bentonite without exploring other ideas.

Thanks for any help you can give me,

I remember, perhaps from Archives, of this suddenly happening to someone. It
appears that they had placed a piece of machinery that vibrated the floor near
the glaze storage area and that caused the settling of their otherwise, well
suspended slurry.

Hi Frank,

Curious. First thing I would ask is if they recently switched water
suppliers--like from a well to city water. While water can't contain
enough impurities to affect glaze composition significantly, it can
affect the ionic character of the slop and hence the
flocculation/deflocculation balance. Also call the water company and
ask if they have just started doing something different or adding
something they haven't added before.

Second I would ask what new ingredient batches they have just started
using. While you say none share similar ingredients, surely they have
some that are the same. It could be a new batch or it could be a mix
like neph sy that is labeled as silica (which is in most glazes).

Are they sure someone hasn't been sneaking some sodium silicate into
their glazes thinking it will somehow help?

Just some thoughts. I'll be interested in what others suggest.

Regards,

John
