Dear Hal Mc Whinnie,

You say <>

Does this mean you have not tested it thoroughly on several clays. =
Perhaps you would explain the Aims and Objectives of this exercise.

Best regards,

Ivor,

who needs an objective other than just being a nice guy. I plan to test
these weekly glazes. Now don't go "gettin" Hal so riled up, he stops sending
weekly recipes.

the glaze was tested in oxidation with standard light body

I did not intend to involve in this thread however as a glaze addict I
have something to say:
This is not the point
Hal is a nice guy!
No one intend to discourage him.
There is a different point.
The written word and what behinds it.

It is possible that hal's glazes are good.
Hal knows the analysis. How does he know?
Is he one of these old timers that calculate in his head?
Does he use a program?
Does he know what he put into the glazes and more than that why he uses
them?

These recipes look weird.
If Hal uses a software. Why not calculating it with appropriate amount
of clay?
If Hal understands what he is doing why using cryolite just for matte
white ( or white matte; because it has been there?
The recipes are hard to read.

About being so kind. It is not that hard to make a recipe either with
software or Curries way or Hopper's way (Hooper?) )
A good glaze has a cause:
There are many white glazes and many turquoise glazes. Many lichen and
many craters.
A gift to this group must be unique.
When I ask for a white glaze - you offer me a white glaze.
When I send "a glaze of the week" it must be an achievement.
Please see Hal, the way Alisa is doing her tests, in a way I disagree in
this way, but she is doing it perfect: She says what frit she uses even
if she does not suit exactly to the recipe she uses.
She explains what does and the results. Perhaps her service is even
greater. She shows us a glaze, even using different ingredients just
keeping the concept may work well, sometimes better than the original.
(So ababi you still disagree?... no she is fine!(
I can see Hal that this is a long time project
http://lsv.ceramics.org/scripts/wa.exe?S2=clayart&L=CLAYART&q=Hal+Mc+Whi
nnie and so on

So you are not a novice!
In this case you must be precise in your explanations.
I tried to see the recipe.
Is it frit P25 or H 25?

OK P!
There are slight different result when you use different programs please
look; your turquoise:

HAL'S TUROQUISE GLOSS
CONE 5-6

a3 feldspar 34.9
frit 25 25
silica 25
whiting 5
copper carb. 3

na2 0.24
k2o 0.20
cao 0.56

p2o3 0.32
al2o3 0.38
sio2 2.88
expansion 0.341

According to the expansion I think you might use Insight with RR
expansion rules Am I right?
In this case why not copy to the clipboard then nicely the recipe into
the E mail?
If this is indid the case, why not making it to 100%
Not 89.9+3?
Is it possible that a material has been forgotten?
Let me try through the formula.

P2O3 is B2O3 definatly not P2O5 like I thought until it shocked me!

I am lost!

Dear Tom Sawyer,

Looks like Ababi has done a good job of answering your question for me.

Between us, in this multinational group, we do a good job of caring and =
sharing, showing and telling. Most of the time we share our philosophies =
and beliefs. The sudden appearance of "Glaze of the Week" without, as I =
recall, any preamble, begged the question. A couple of years or so ago =
Hal kindly provided his Teaching Plan for people who were wishing to =
learn or teach Glaze Chemistry.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia

I AM GLAD SOMEONE REMEMBERED.

THE GLAZE OF THE WEEK IS AN IDEA TO TAKE SOME OF THE OVER 5,000 GKLAZES WHICH
i COLLECTED FROM OTHER POTTERS AS WELL AS PUBLISHED SOURCES .

I HAVE RECALCULATED THE VALUES AND OFFER THEM FOR DISCUSSION.

IN FACT i AM PLEASED WITH THE DISCUSSION WHICH HAS TAKEN PLACE SO FAR.
