Paul, the 40 cfm rating on your vacuum pump relates
to the volume of air that it can evacuate and still hold
the rated vacuum (usually specified in inches of water
column), not to the force that it can exert. With a
vacuum system, the pressure differential can never
be more than atmospheric pressure...about 14psi
at sea level. 40 cfm is a HUGE rating for a vacuum
pump. You could use a bypass(not a regulator) as
David mentioned but it would probably have to bypass
80-90% of the pump capacity. Judging from the pumps
I have seen on pug mills, they look to be about 5cfm.
Perhaps others can verify this. Without an adequate
bypass, the pump will overheat and/or stall out.

Michael,
The Bluebirds shread the clay before deairing. I don't think that the
auger enters into it. The clay on the outside of the barrel is subject
to the rippling of the barrel wall, that is the rings cast into the
wall. This "wedges the clay" in a different and more significant way
than the center clay gets wedged in the mill.

Paul,
I don't think the pump will stall. It just will reach its rated vacuum
and then just move. There will not be much pressure to stall it.
