I am afraid the simple answer is that it depends on the clay body. My current
body has lots of 35 mesh kyanite and does not require preheating. The shape
of the piece will make a difference -extremely forceful collering in will
increase the chances of cracking as will uneven wall thickness
If you think about firing when you are throwing and make an effort not to
create too much stress in the piece you will improve your chances of having the
piece survive. Slow drying will help and minimal trimming also helps. I also
burnish my pieces although I am not sure if tis has any effect on survivability.
And of course if you refire a piece the chances of it cracking increase.
Another trick that helps reduce stress in the piece is to throw both clockwise and
counterclockwise on the same piece.
And never use water!
