Dear Phil: In defense of my neigbouring vintners the ladybugger thing was a
phenomonia that caught them off guard. Kinda like a thunderstorm just as
you're at Cone 9. A bad firing happens to us all in spite of years of
experience. You have to have the time to wait it out to get the finished
product home safely. I think they are prepared now. My millionaire winery
friend actually buys lady bugs (not the Asian kind) from the land of
Swartzenger(sp) to naturally deal with aphids. he also experimented this
year with kaolin to dust the grapes as a pest control product. Bentonite is
also well used at his winery.
I am unable to drink alot of European wines because of sulphates. some
Ontario wines also carry them. they affect my eyes immediately. One sip and
i look I've been 3 rounds with Cassius Clay or a been on a all night bender.
I avoid these wines. there are plenty good cheap wines that are free of
sulphites. You gave up too early. I'm a red blooded wino. 2 glasses of red
wine per night is good for you. Lots written on it's benefits.
I have been invited to dinner tomorrow night to the millionaires. There are
going to be plenty of grape growers and vintners there. i will ask
questions. It is our Thanksgiving weekend and he is having a small party
with 30 turkeys. Who knows what's for supper.
cheers,
Tony
