i totally agree.
two glasses per day.
at dinner.

but, two becomes 4, four becomes 8, etc. etc.
etc.

if we could only keep all things at two.
but, that damn math thing always enters the picture.

Wine is okay. I usually get my health protection from eating the
grapes directly (I'd rather drink beer or sake.) The good stuff in wine
(not counting the alcohol) is the red color from the grape skins, so I eat
the skins (Japanese usually don't eat the skins. They don't eat apple
skins either.)

It is the end of grape growing season and my wife Jean teaches
English conversation to a couple women who are grape growers. They brought
us a basket of grapes, both red and green. These are huge grapes, the size
of plums back home. They are expensive: they are grown in vineyards that
are enclosed by a net structure, with each bunch of grapes growing within a
white paper bag tied around them. Time to time, the farmers take the bags
off "to shape the grapes." *Haha!* Grape Bonsai!

The farmers have been having to patrol their vineyards, because
thieves have been stealing grapes off the vine to re-sell.

Jean was also offered a bushel of wine grapes and a recipe for
making wine, but she turned them down. I told her not to do this next
time. I'll make the wine for her.

Nobody has taught the Japanese about "bulk sales" where beer is
concerned. Actually, part of the reason might be because of the high tax
on beer. Sake, on the other hand, can be bought for about $4.50 for 1.8
liters (cheaper tax.) Sochu, a refined drink, is stronger and very cheap.

But, it doesn't matter if you buy one beer or a case, each beer
is the same price, about $1.80 for the "non-beer" beer (beer that doesn't
have the exact hops, etc to be called beer), and $2.25 for a can of real
Kirin. Makes it easier to drink only one or two, because I only buy one
or two at a time. Because vegetables, fruit and fish are so fresh here,
we grocery shop almost every day, so no need to buy a case of beer like back
home. :^)

There is research showing that people that are on a carefully planned
"limited calorie" diet (or should I say "starvation diet") live longer
and have few health problems. On that note...I just read a research
article last week showing that drinking red wine daily produces the same
physiological milieu in the body and same health benefits. So cheers!!!
(Salud, Skoal etc.) Here's to eating well and drinking that wonderful
red wine.

It makes sense that red wine is symbolic for life in so many religions
and cultures...I better stop before I drag out "The Golden Bough" (a
classic anthropology text on religion, symbolism, etc.) and bore ya'll
to death.

Still pining over that wonderful wine I had at Tony's place. He's so
right about the lack of preservatives. No headaches, no puffy eyes
after drinking liberally of that local vintage he talks about.
