Hello,
I am going to Colorado Springs next week to visit my daughter. It's my first
visit in that part of the US and I was wondering if there were any
suggestions as to what I should see? I have found out that there is a ceramic supply
called Southern Colorado Ceramic Supply. Does anyone know if its a big store?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! Tonya in Louisville, KY

Well, I have to admit to a HUGE bias (I'm a tilemaker working in the
tradtion of the Arts & Crafts Movement), but I'd recommend going to see the
old factory building of the Van Briggle Pottery built in 1907 incorporating
lots of their tile and architectural ceramic elements. (this is not the
current Van Briggle pottery operation, which you can also tour). The old
pottery is at 300 W. Uintah St. This building is now owned by the
University and occupied (at least when I saw it in 1992) by the offices of
the facitlities maintenance department.

Here's the first of three pages of photos, so you can decide for yourself:

There's more tile inside, but of course it's in rooms that are in use. My
cousin and I spent so much time looking at and photographing the exterior
tiles that the department head interrupted his work, invited us in and let
us photograph the fireplace and floor in his office, as well as a large
installation in another room. But I doubt most visitors are that lucky.

in Oakland/Berkeley by the Bay, sunny and warm with still no hint of the end
of the dry season - we usually get the first rain sometime in Oct.

If you wish to make a side trip, going to the Sangre de Christo Arts
Center in Pueblo is worth the ride. Pueblo is about 45 minutes from
Colorado Springs, and the Arts Center is one of the best crafts
museums anywhere. It is small, focused, and well curated. They also
have a wonderful ceramics studio.

If you have kids, there is of the best kid's museums, primarily
art-focused, in the country, IMHO.

Their link is: http://www.sdc-arts.org/. =20

In Co Springs, you MUST visit the Uncle Wilber fountain. A
masterpiece of tile work and fun. Worth the trip to the springs just
for the fountain.
