I'm seeing a lot of posts from people building web sites, and would like to build one myself.
I'd appreciate any feedback regarding choice of software specifically for Mac OSX. I am aware
of both Adobe Go Live and Macromedia DreamWeaver, both of which are pretty spendy - 399
or so. Would like to find something less expensive, but ease of use is important also.....
Thanks in advance for any help.

How about Netscape.
It is free and they have been improving it for many years.
Just choose New Composer Page from the File menu.

At school we use Dreamweaver now. It is big and does so much.
Consequently it is hard to use. I love claris homepage for sites that
have twenty or fewer pages but its sitewide functions are so slow on
big sites. I don't think running it in Classic is problem. Do not use
it for loading your site to your server. Use Fetch or another FTP
program for that. Do not save your p-words in Claris. They get stored
in the site definition file and it can accidentally loaded to your
server. Adobe GoLive is much like Dreamweaver. Our faculty took a good
hard look and bought Dreamweaver.
To set up a site for an office to edit or any un-web savvy editor you
could set up or get set up a WIKI site. Visit PatMichaud.com or email
me off the list for more info

I have just finished a free months trial of "Freeway" a mac only site builder
see http://www.softpress.com
Works a bit like Pagemaker, and it is possible, with the advanced
edition. to do all your image preparation in "Freeway" too
For my own site (listed below) I used "Claris Home Page" an older
and very basic programme that can create good clear layouts without
all the distraction of endless bells and whistles.
Might be hard to find, however. and it would not work in system X
Neither of these need you to learn the HTML coding ( they do it for you)
best wishes,
keep it simple and be prepared to test your patience
