I usually sit in the bushes when people roast others on the 'real-ness' of their lives or jobs
or dreams .... but this recent post brought out the bear in me ....
"My pottery is our only source of income so it cannot be construed as a
hobby. When I see someone who has a hubby that is bringing in the money
that allows the family to have insurance coverage of any sort, pays the
bills, drives a car newer than 1980, has store bought cloths, buys at
walmart, can afford to go on vacations or even a movie, I do call that a
hobby, in drag."
So, by your definition .... in any relationship where both people are working ... one has a
'real' job and the other has a hobby. And, I guess the one who earns the most gets to be
the one with the 'job'?
OK you guys .... sit your mates down tonight and hash out who has the real job and who
has the hobby. I don't care if you are both potters ... one of you is not really working. (and
... could you please not get excited at the thought of being the one in drag!)
Judging other potters so harshly and by such narrow parameters is not very realistic. Just
because a person is uninsured and cannot afford to shop at Wal Mart does not mean
they have the only true and pure vocation.
Poverty does not mean you are any better or kinder or more talented than anyone else.
Looking down so harshly on others does not give you the opportunity to learn from them
or to give them the benefit of your knowledge.
I actually love it when people ask if I just play with clay all day .... I flash them my biggest
grin and say ....' Yeah, aren't I just the luckiest person on earth!'
Chris Campbell - in North Carolina - I have decided my hubby can have the 'real' job
status around my studio since he does the bookwork, customer contact, billing, taxes,
purchasing and web site contruction. I just play in the mud 6 days a week ... 50 weeks a
year ... whether I feel like it or not.

Careful Jonathan! That chenille dress and that nylon wig is gonna go up
like a bonfire if you get too close to the kiln!
