My attempts at getting a glaze similar to the one used at the Newcomb Pot=
tery at one point in their exisitance:
Ababi suggested Waxy White and I used it over Laguna's ^6 Alfred Blue. Re=
sults: Nice satin matte medium blue.
Lily suggested some colorants and I used the Emms. Because it was in liqu=
id form after I mixed and sieved it I used 2 tablespoons per 200 grams of=
Waxy White. Another test I added 4 T to 200 G of Waxy. Results: the firs=
t test was a pale blue satin glaze and the second test was a darker blue =
but doubling the colorant made it a bit more interesting and not just bec=
ause it was darker. Lily had suggested that you let this dry out and then=
you could measure it accurately
The next three tests I used John and Ron's High Calcium I glaze as a base=
.( I have no idea what happened to the font here and I can't figure out h=
ow to change it back). Anyway, per suggestions, I added nickel and tin to=
the base with 1.5% cobalt carb, 6% rutile, 2% nickel and 3 % tin. Result=
s: one glaze application was thick and it was a satin battleship grey. Th=
e thin application had a lot of ugly green mixed with the grey. I'm going=
to try this again but I'll use 1.5% cobalt oxide, rather than carb. and =
.5% nickel. The final test was, again, the High Cal I for a base. I added=
1.5% cobalt carb, 6% rutile, 1% manganese carb and 5% ultrox. Results: a=
nice navy blue satin matte glaze. The firing schedule was the slow cool.
All of these glazes looked good ( except the thin nickel) but they don't =
come close to Newcomb. I wish I could send a picture but even if I had a =
good picture, I don't know how to send it.Thanks to all for suggestions. =
I'll keep trying.
By the way, a piece of Newcomb pottery sold at an auction in Houston this=
past week for over $78,000. No, that's not a typo.
